Picnic Cooler

Cronstroms Picnic Cooler

Here is a picture of a generic Cronstroms picnic cooler we restored a while back. Picnic coolers are pretty easy to restore, if you find them in decent shape. We painted this one a nice 50’s green and decorated it with original Florida travel decals. Original travel decals are easily available. Do a search on eBay for “vintage travel decals” and you will find them for every state, many cities and tourist spots.

When complete, picnic coolers make a great addition to your vacation home decor, gameroom or to show with your antique auto at car shows.

I am absolutely loving your site, and not just because the Retro Planet logo looks like our wedding invitation :-)

We’re in the process of renovating our kitchen using original 1940s/50s kitchen units made from aluminium left over after WWII. If the war had continued they would have been made into Spitfire nose cones, but the company that made them turned them into extremely cool kitchen units instead and I’ve been blogging the slightly painful process here.

Now if only West London was a bit closer to Nashua …

I have a Cronco PORT-O-ROTOR ice chest made by
    Cronstroms Manufacturing Co
at 4225 Hiawatha ave , Minneapolis 6, Minn.

I am wondering if you could pin point a date for this cooler and possibly a value.

    Thank you for your time,

    Robert Altergott

    Robert,

Your best bet is to try ebay or Craig’s List. I have seen them on ebay, recently, dating from the 50s or 60s. That would give you a rough estimate on the value, but remember value changes based on condition.

    Wright,

Your best bet is to try ebay. I have found one for sale there at this link: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Aluminum-Cronco-Cronstroms-Cooler-Excellent-/330440769424
Not sure if this is the same as your coolers, but it will give you an estimate on value.

I have a 7-UP cooler. The latches are on the side, with a bottle opener on it. I was wondering you might tell me the value of the cooler. Thank You

I have a Cronstrom cooler too, in excellent condition. It has the “Hawthorne” logo used by Monkey Wards during the 1950s. We got it probably about 1953. I still use it, as it keeps stuff cool better than the new one.

These coolers came with an ice rack, but mine got lost along the way a few years ago. :(
