The Jewett Bevador Giant Circular Cooler

The Bevador cooler is a beast, but yet a very interesting item! With the dome top it measures 7’ 6” tall and weighs in at 1050 pounds. It was produced in the 1950’s by the Jewett Refrigerator Co. of Buffalo, NY. Inside the cooler are seven revolving adjustable shelves. The door has five feet of white neon tubes between the glass. We owned one of these and considered restoring it several times but never got around to it. I have seen them restored as Coke bottles, but our idea was to take off the top and restore it like the 1960’s Coca-Cola Diamond pattern can. The one we owned was just in too bad a shape to do anything with so we sold it ‘as is’.

I believe the company is still in business and manufactures blood refrigeration cabinets. I’m not 100% sure, so if anyone has any information please blog-in and let us know.

There is a functioning one in a little bar called “Nicks” in Lemont.

  • 2 Gary Graham // Jan 31, 2009 at 6:48 pm

I own a bar/restaurant and have had one these coolers in service for the 25 years my wife and I have owned the place. It was in use when we bought the place in 1984 and the previous owner had it in operation for at least 25 years before that.

I am interest in obtaining a latch set for mine. The door side of the latch has a part broken that holds the pin that holds the handle in place.

    Any ideas?

The info I have on these are that there were 11 of them made for the 39 worlds fair on treaure island san francisco. There are two in working condition that look like wood wine bottles in a little restaraunt in san rafael called Le Chalet Basque http://www.chaletbasquemarin.com/ if you go to there site you can see it in the corner on page 6 of the indoor seating. If anyone owns one and is in the market of getting rid of it let me know.

I play with a jazz group at a great burger joint in Cincinnati, Ohio called TERRY’S TURF CLUB that has at least two working Bevadors. They look awesome and keep the beer nice and cold.

In honor of the retro vibe, we call ourselves

    The Bevadors

    Karen,
We aren’t able to give estimates on the value of an item. If you keep an eye on Ebay or Craig’s List, your item is sure to be listed at some point. That may give you a rough idea of it’s value but keep in mind prices vary greatly depending on condition. If anyone can help with a value of this item please comment.

I saw one of these at a bar in Hammondsport, NY this weekend and am completely intriguiged by it. I want to learn as much about as possible about them and the company that made them. It’s top label says Beerador, not Bevador. The bartender at Maloney’s Irish Pub told me they had latch problems, also. I do not know if they repaired it with authentic parts or not.

I am interested in purchasing a Bevador or Beerador for a concept I am putting together. Email me if a) you have one to sell or b) know where I can find one. I am in the Chicago area, but would be happy to travel to pick one up.

We have a working bevador cooler and need a new handle any ideas where to get one/

  • 17 vintagevending // Nov 25, 2009 at 10:47 am

    Chris,

This seems to be a common problem with Bevadors, and a lot of people are looking for parts to fix the handle. Unfortunately, we don’t have any recommendations of where to buy the parts. If anyone can help out with this, please comment.

There are a few Bevador coolers in use at Terry’s Turf Club, a very hip venue in Cincinnati, OH. The Fri-Sat night jazz group is called Eric Campbell & The Bevadors!

the bar i goto in a town in ohio. call lutchs cafe has 1 thats working. bar owner has owned the bar for almost 30 years and its was there when she bought the place.. it still works. had the motor fixed on it some 20 years back. its not in use. just a storage unit atm. unsure what its worth. its pretty much the way it was purchase except the painter painted it to match the bar. but im pretty sure it being latex paint that i’ll come off with ease. anyone got any info on what its worth its a model number b550 and i believe it had a top on it @ one time. the top is gone on this one.

  • 20 Adam // Jan 12, 2010 at 11:35 am

I have a Beerador model that is and has been in working operation in the bar I now own since the 1960s. The previous owner took it out of the bar in the 80s and had it painted to match the then local brewery here in La Crosse Wisconsin. i too have a missing pin for the door handle. any ideas? We use the heck out of the cooler and get a lot of comments about it. Adam

  • 29 Marie // May 28, 2010 at 2:06 pm

I used to work in a blood bank in Charlotte, NC where we had 2 Jewett Bevadors. They worked perfectly well, and showed no signs of losing their cooling ability.

  • 30 vintagevending // May 28, 2010 at 2:09 pm

    Scott,

We can’t help you out as we are not appraisers.
I found a similar model on ebay.
