Royal Crown Slider

The Ideal 55B Royal Crown soda machine is the most common of all Ideal’s soda vendors. The Ideal 55B is a “slider”, which is a machine where, after you deposit your coin, you slide the bottle through a rack to the opening to get the bottle out. The Ideal 55B was made from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. It vends 50 bottles and pre-cools 80.

RC Ideal 55B Vendor

The Royal Crown embossed sliders are the most common among the 55Bs. The cooler design has an inherent flaw that it shared with a lot of other soda vending machines. The problem is that it was possible to consume a soda without paying for it. Evidently there were people that opened the lid, popped a cap off a soda, inserted a straw and drank the soda without removing the bottle or paying for it. Most likely, once the storeowner caught on, he’d watch the machine very closely, or better yet, have it moved to the front of the store where he would have been manning the checkout. This Ideal slider is one that we restored.

I have an Ideal 55B similar to the one shown. I have never restored one before, but I am trying to restore this one. The question I have is, how do I get the entire coin box off so that I can do a better job of restoration? I can’t seem to see how it comes off. Thank you for your response and for your time!

I need to know how much freon is supposed to be on the LOW side of an Ideal 55 slider. Thanks

  • 12 vintagevending // Sep 8, 2009 at 2:20 pm

If your machine has the original compressor, the compressor tag will tell you how many ounces of freon is needed.

I have one I would like to sell, every thing on it works. Would like to know what it is worth,or someone to make me an offer

  • 14 Sundi // Feb 2, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I recently purchased a coke machine that is the exact style as above. it is missing the inside rack and the cord needs to be replaced soon (safety)…will that depreciate value? it has original paint, cord, compressor and is in really good shape. like i said I do need to locate the inside rack- paid $850 but really wondering what it IS roughly, worth? it has a 15cent box on it. Oh, there is a pad lock hasp thing on top of the lid by the coin box… is that supposed to be there?

  • 15 vintagevending // Feb 3, 2010 at 3:47 pm

It will not depreciate the value to replace the cord. We aren’t able to give you an estimate on value, but check with Craig’s List or ebay to see if a comparable item is listed. Also, the worth changes based on condition.

  • 16 Glenn // Feb 23, 2010 at 7:05 am

  • 19 Joe // Apr 2, 2010 at 7:39 am

I have an Ideal Coke machine (model 25H) that looks exactly like the Ideal model 55. It is missing the coin box and bottle rack. It runs great and gets very cold. What would this be worth? Where could I get the missing parts?

  • 20 vintagevending // Apr 2, 2010 at 8:20 am

You can find the pieces you are missing at http://www.fun-tronicsllc.com/store.php?crn=338
We can’t estimate a value on your machine, but try ebay or Craig’s list, sometimes they pop up there.

I have a 10 cent version of this Ideal machine- It is a 7-Up one. It does need a new power cord, but everything else is in place- it still vends correctly. Has some surface rust. Was debating if anyone local restored these things or collected them. MN- At over 200lbs, I’m tired of moving this thing. Looking to sell it or restore it and sell it.

My uncle Ralph Warner was one of the orginal owners of Ideal Dispenser Co. He and a friend put every penny they had into the company in a small building and slept in their cars for a few months until they could afford a place to live. I remember going there as a child and playing on one of their old typewriters. My father made a trailer for them to deliver their first drink dispensers with. My uncle sold out and retired to FL and died at age 47. He was quite the character.

I have a Royal Crown Cola 55 Ideal Slider. I have someone that will paint it to original color, and do repairs to the rust, and hole on door. With paint and labor, he is charging me $500.00. Is this a good price, or too much? He does professional work. I have seen his past jobs, and he will make it look like-new again.

I have an Ideal Model A55 Squirt embossed machine, beautiful bright Squirt color yellowish/orange. All original, beautiful stickers on the sides: 7-up, Squirt, Tru-Ade ads. Still have Dad’s Rootbeer bottles that we found inside the machine. 10 cent coin slot. Compressor still kicks in when plugged in. How do I find out what this machine would be worth? I may be interested in selling it.

  • 62 vintagevending // Sep 17, 2012 at 8:09 am

You can get an idea of how much machines like yours are going for by looking at online auction sites or talking to other collectors. We do not give appraisals or estimates of market values for machines. Price is always a variable, depending on the timing in regard to the economy and what buyers are looking for. Good luck with your sale!
